UPCOMING EVENTS
Samanvaya is the product of years of learning, practicing, and performing two distinct classical dance traditions of India—Bharatanatyam, from the South, and Kathak, from the North. To the eye, the differences are immediately apparent: costuming, stances, movement vocabulary, and musical traditions each carry their own distinctive identity. Yet beneath these external differences lies a shared philosophical foundation rooted in the ancient Indian understanding of movement, music, and expression.
Over the years, Seema began to observe how her body and mind responded to—and instinctively adapted to—a Bharatanatyam or Kathak prompt, as well as moments when they resisted. The experience began to feel less like a meeting of opposites and more like a conversation between two sisters: connected by a common heritage, yet each possessing her own distinct character, voice, and way of moving through the world.
From this exploration, Samanvaya—A Dialogue between Bharatanatyam and Kathak, conceptualized by Seema through close conversations with her gurus and with Ramya Kapadia, was born.
What you will witness is a meeting of two classical dance forms—distinct in their vocabulary and aesthetics, yet brought together through the shared languages of music, movement, rhythm, and expression
